Centrally located on Sydney’s North Shore, RFA Architects is a boutique architectural practice offering a wide range of architectural and interior design services. With over 40 years combined experience, directors Brian Hollis and Andrew Ip lead the team of 25 architects and interior designers.

Our creative approach, and many years of experience across all facets of architecture and construction, allow RFA to offer a seamless blend of skills and technical systems resulting in projects with a high level of practical and aesthetic design with uncompromising quality.

RFA is committed to delivering clients a professional service that responds to their specific requirements, while respecting the local context and greater environment. We provide a creative and inventive design solution for each unique project and ensure it is on time and within budget.

With a very talented and diverse team of varying skillsets, RFA has had much success and accolades producing timeless designs across all facets of architecture from elegant beach and harbour front houses and luxurious boutique apartment blocks to commercial, retail, corporate, banking, childcare centres, aged care, shopping centres, industrial projects and ‘existing use rights’ sites.

We offer a full range of architectural and interior design services from the initial preparation of the client brief and conceptual design, through to project completion.

RFA is highly regarded for assessing the merits of potential sites and projects and also for our strategic approach and success in pushing envelopes to maximise our client’s requirements and investment. We are well affiliated with teams of town planners, landscape designers, visualisation experts, engineers and builders to ensure the success of any given project.

Centrally located in Crows Nest, less than 10 minutes from Sydney CBD, RFA has obtained well in excess of 100 approvals locally on the Lower North Shore of Sydney. Further afield, RFA has also completed a plethora of jobs Australia wide and even designed aussie pie shops for the ski fields of Whistler, boutique ski apartments in beautiful Queenstown, New Zealand, and exclusive tropical beachfront villas in Vanuatu.

We have the diverse skills and services, latest high-tech equipment, resources and expertise, to achieve success with any project irrespective of size, type or geographic location.

After interviewing various architects we were drawn to Brian and his team because of their local experience, down-to-earth demeanour and can do attitude.

With his thorough knowledge and understanding of Planning Controls, and the local Council, Brian helped us arrive at a ‘stretch’ design which was both functional, and very mindful of aesthetics and the ‘look’ of the proposed development.

There were a few challenging moments with Council along the way but Brian negotiated an excellent outcome, and ultimately gained Councils support for our DA. We were extremely happy with the design, the communication throughout this process and naturally the end result – stamped plans that were not significantly compromised from our original ‘stretch’ vision.

In my capacity as National Manager – Retail Workplace, Westpac Group Property, I have had the pleasure of working with RFA as our external architect/interior designer on the rollout of Westpac retail branches for the last 3 years.

It is without hesitation that I endorse the RFA team, both the national leadership team as well as the regional delivery units.

Managing time, cost and quality is paramount to Westpac and RFA has not disappointed us. From site analysis, conceptual design workshops, buildability reviews, authority approvals, detailed design and documentation, the delivery has been exemplary.

Anthony Shina, National Manager Retail Workplace Group Property, WESTPAC. January 2015

I have had the pleasure of working in an advisory capacity with the Director Brian Hollis and his colleagues in the firm on a number of residential projects in recent years. They have impressed me with their thoughtful approach to design, always willing to respond to comments and suggestions in creative and constructive ways, with a sensitive and balanced approach to social and environmental issues, resulting in buildings of excellent quality which fit comfortably and elegantly into their urban context.

Emeritus Professor Peter Webber. February 2015
Emeritus Professor University of Sydney, and consultant on a wide range of planning, urban design and architectural issues. Full-time roles have included Commissioner former NSW Planning and Environment Commission, Government Architect of NSW, Professor & Head of Department of Architecture & pro-Dean University of Sydney.

After a long standing working relationship, Private Certifiers Australia (PCA) has always found RFA Architects to be extremely proficient in their knowledge, design and construction documentation required for complying developments, and construction certificates.

It is critical that any design fully complies with the BCA and state environmental planning policies for the benefit of both client and builder. RFA’s extensive understanding of all relevant legislation, and their excellent communication skills, help in achieving high quality, well thought out design solutions, whilst meeting deadlines. This results in fast turnaround times and successful projects.
